Pressemitteilung vom 6.10.2026 (english translation below)
Was ist passiert?

Press Release dated October 6, 2026
The “zuka solicafé” at the Haus der Jugend will close at the end of the year.
What happened?
In March, we planned an event on “Anti-Muslim Racism in Germany” together with four partner organizations. The management of the JBW at the Haus der Jugend banned this event, citing vague allegations of anti-Semitism against our partners.
Accusations of antisemitism, like all accusations of racism, are always serious, especially for us, as we deliberately work in a discrimination-critical and inclusive way. It is essential that such accusations, once raised, are substantiated: either to clarify them or to prevent their instrumentalization.
Despite repeated inquiries to the JBW management and board, including a personal conversation, the allegations have still not been substantiated. This shifts the burden of proof: it is no longer the allegation that has to be justified, but the people affected who must prove their innocence.
In May, the JBW board unexpectedly limited the lease to a maximum end date of 31 December 2026.
To this day, despite repeated inquiries, we have not received a comprehensible explanation for this matter, either from the board or from the management of the JBW.
With a great deal of support from our community, we fought for many months: for transparency regarding how this momentous decision came about, and for an extension of the lease until April 30, 2027, so that we could complete the ongoing educational program (BBB) at the zuka. We succeeded in neither.
Now all that is left for us is to accept this outcome, to enjoy our last months at the zuka with you to the fullest, to wind down the café responsibly, and to move on to planning for 2027.
Our institutional funding from the City of Freiburg is not currently at risk, so we are able to continue offering many of our programs for the time being at other locations as well as in our community garden.
We are more determined than ever to continue our work. The issues that are close to our hearts are:
- Anti-discrimination
- Inclusion
- Socio-ecological transformation
Specifically, this means that we’re looking for suitable venues for the many cultural and educational events, as well as community events, taking place right now at zuka — such as KiKaffee, Cine Arab, Cine Mir, Unity Beats, and workshops. We’re not looking for “one” café, but rather for many places where we can bring people together.
We would like to thank all the many people who supported us during these incredibly difficult and exhausting months!
